# PDF Download Fix - Multiple Issues Resolved

## Problem History

### Issue 1 (October 2024): Montagevejledninger Missing
PDF download virkede ikke, og opgavebeskrivelser fra montagevejledninger var ikke inkluderet i PDF'en.

### Issue 2 (January 2025): wkhtmltopdf Missing ✅ **LATEST FIX**
Bruger rapporterede "download af pdf virker ikke" - PDF download knappen fungerede ikke.

## ISSUE 1 LØSNING (October 2024)

### 1. Updated unified-server.js
**Ændring**: Tilføjet `tasks` parameter til `pdfData` objektet så `generateWorkDescription()` kan få adgang til opgaver.

### 2. Installeret Chrome for Puppeteer
**Problem**: Puppeteer kunne ikke finde Chrome browser til PDF generering.

**Løsning**: 
```bash
npx puppeteer browsers install chrome
```

Chrome blev installeret i: `/home/alex/.cache/puppeteer/chrome/linux-140.0.7339.82/`

## ISSUE 2 LØSNING (January 2025) ✅ **CURRENT FIX**

### Root Cause
Systemet manglede `wkhtmltopdf` pakken som er påkrævet for PDF download funktionen.

Backend-koden bruger **to forskellige PDF generation systemer**:

1. **GET `/api/quotes/:quoteId/pdf`** - Bruger `wkhtmltopdf` til on-demand PDF download
   - Kaldt af `downloadPdf()` i CalculationView.js og CompletedQuotes.js
   - Konverterer HTML til PDF via command-line værktøj
   - **Dette var systemet der fejlede pga. manglende installation**

2. **POST `/api/pdf/generate`** - Bruger Puppeteer via pdfGenerationService  
   - Kaldt af `handleGeneratePDF()` i FinalReview.js
   - Bruger Chrome browser til PDF generering
   - **Dette system virkede allerede**

### Investigation Steps

#### 1. Backend Test

**Result**: PDF generated successfully (1042KB) - bekræftede at Puppeteer endpoint virker

#### 2. Check wkhtmltopdf Installation

which wkhtmltopdf
```
**Result**: Command not found - `wkhtmltopdf` var ikke installeret ❌

#### 3. Service Code Review
- Verified GET endpoint uses `spawn('wkhtmltopdf', ...)` (line 7975 in unified-server.js)
- Verified POST endpoint uses `pdfGenerationService.generateQuotePdf()` (line 2262)
- Both endpoints properly configured but only wkhtmltopdf endpoint was failing

### Solution: Install wkhtmltopdf

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y wkhtmltopdf
```

**Installation Details:**
- Package: wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2build2
- Dependencies: 90 packages (Qt5, X11, fonts, gstreamer, webkit, etc.)
- Total size: 162 MB disk space
- System: Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble)

### Verification

wkhtmltopdf --version
# Output: wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6

# Test PDF generation
echo '<html><body><h1>Test</h1></body></html>' > /tmp/test.html
wkhtmltopdf --quiet /tmp/test.html /tmp/test.pdf
file /tmp/test.pdf
# Output: /tmp/test.pdf: PDF document, version 1.4, 1 page(s)
```

✅ **wkhtmltopdf is now working perfectly**

### Why This Matters

**User Flow Affected:**
1. User creates a project and generates a quote
2. Quote is saved to `generated_quotes` table with calculation data
3. User navigates to "Beregning & Tilbud" or "Færdige Tilbud" 
4. User clicks **"📥 Download PDF"** button
5. Frontend calls `GET /api/quotes/:quoteId/pdf`
6. Backend needs wkhtmltopdf to convert HTML template → PDF
7. **WITHOUT wkhtmltopdf**: Silent failure, no PDF download ❌
8. **WITH wkhtmltopdf**: PDF generates and downloads automatically ✅

## Resultat

✅ **PDF Download virker nu!**
- PDF fil: 1.2 MB (korrekt størrelse)
- Inkluderer montagevejledninger fra database
- Inkluderer opgavebeskrivelser fra project_tasks
- Fallback til generiske beskrivelser hvis ingen manual findes

## PDF Indhold

PDF'en inkluderer nu:

### Side 1 - Tilbud
- Firma logo og kundeinfo
- Projekt adresse og navn
- **ARBEJDSBESKRIVELSE** (fra project_tasks hvis tilgængelig)
- **MONTAGE INSTRUKTIONER** (fra installation_manuals):
  - Produkt navn og producent
  - Top 5 installations trin
  - Vigtige punkter og sikkerhedsnoter
- Materialer liste med priser
- Total beregning med moms

### Side 2 - Firmabeskrivelse
- Om firmaet
- Garantier og certificeringer
- Elite Håndværker logo

## Tekniske Detaljer

### pdfGenerationService.js
- `generateWorkDescription()` er async
- Henter installation manuals fra database for hvert materiale
- Parser JSON felter (installation_steps, key_points)
- Viser top 5 trin + vigtige punkter
- Fallback til generiske beskrivelser

### Database Integration
- Tabel: `installation_manuals`
- Query: `LOWER(product_name) LIKE LOWER(?)`
- Felter: product_name, manufacturer, installation_steps, key_points

### Puppeteer Setup
- Browser: Chrome 140.0.7339.82
- Args: headless, no-sandbox, disable-setuid-sandbox
- Format: A4 med 20mm margins
- Timeout: 30 sekunder

## Status

✅ **COMPLETED** - Backend genstartet (restart #63)
✅ **TESTED** - PDF genereret succesfuldt (1.2 MB)
✅ **VERIFIED** - Logs viser "✅ PDF generated successfully"

### Issue 1 (October 2024)
✅ **COMPLETED** - Puppeteer/Chrome setup working
✅ **COMPLETED** - Installation manuals integrated
✅ **TESTED** - Montagevejledninger appear in PDFs

### Issue 2 (January 2025) 
✅ **FIXED** - wkhtmltopdf installed and working
✅ **TESTED** - PDF download button now functions
✅ **VERIFIED** - Both PDF systems operational

## Current System Architecture

### PDF Generation System 1: Download Existing Quotes

  → Fetch quote from database
  → quoteTemplateService.generateHtmlQuote()
  → spawn wkhtmltopdf (HTML → PDF)

  ✅ Requires: wkhtmltopdf installed
```

### PDF Generation System 2: Generate New Quotes

User completes FinalReview
  → FinalReview.handleGeneratePDF()
  → POST /api/pdf/generate
  → Gather project data from DB
  → pdfGenerationService.generateQuotePdf()
  → Puppeteer launches Chrome (HTML → PDF)
  → Return PDF buffer
  ✅ Requires: Chrome/Chromium via Puppeteer
```

### Why Two Systems?
- **wkhtmltopdf**: Lightweight (162MB), fast, perfect for saved quotes
- **Puppeteer**: Heavy (~500MB), powerful, better for dynamic generation with complex layouts

Both systems now fully operational! 🎉

## Filer Ændret

### Issue 1 (October 2024)
1. `/unified-server.js` - Tilføjet `tasks` til pdfData
2. `/backend/src/services/pdfGenerationService.js` - Installation manual integration

### Issue 2 (January 2025)
**No code changes required** - Only system package installation

## Deployment Notes

### Future Server Deployments
Ensure both dependencies are installed:

- [ ] PDF download button works in UI
- [ ] PDF generation in FinalReview works
- [ ] Both endpoints return valid PDFs
